The war in Ukraine has reached a sad and significant point, with Vladimir Putin’s Russia reportedly suffering more than one million military casualties since it began its attempted invasion. This tragic milestone highlights the enormous human cost of the three-and-a-half-year war, which started in February 2022. Beyond the shocking number of lives lost, the Russian military has also seen massive destruction of its equipment, showing just how intense and drawn-out the fighting has been.
The scale of these losses makes clear the difficulties Moscow has faced in achieving its military goals. According to numbers released by Ukraine’s Armed Forces leadership found by Express, the total number of Russian soldiers lost has now reached 1,020,010 since the war began. This number shows a steady and severe reduction in troops over the course of the invasion.
There is some question about exactly who is included in these numbers, especially with reports that North Korean soldiers have been involved. It is believed that North Korea sent around 11,000 troops to help Russia over the past nine months, with about 6,000 of them likely killed. Since Putin won’t stop anytime soon, it seems like more may die.
Russia has taken major losses in the war with Ukraine
Russia’s losses in equipment are just as staggering, showing how destructive modern warfare can be for military gear. Ukraine’s military leadership reports that 10,980 Russian tanks have been destroyed, a huge blow to their ground attack strength. Along with tanks, 22,922 armored fighting vehicles have been taken out, further weakening Russia’s ability to move troops and fight with mechanized forces. The Russian military’s supply network has also been badly damaged, with 53,593 vehicles and fuel tanks reportedly destroyed, making it much harder to keep troops supplied and mobile.
Artillery systems, which are key for bombarding enemy positions, have also been lost in huge numbers. The reported destruction of 29,718 artillery systems and 1,427 multiple rocket launchers means Russia’s long-range firepower has been greatly reduced. Additionally, 1,190 air defense systems have been wiped out, possibly leaving Russian forces more vulnerable to attacks from the air. Together, these numbers show a steady and widespread weakening of Russia’s traditional military strength in nearly every area of combat.
Russia’s air and naval forces have also suffered heavy losses. Ukrainian reports say that 420 planes and 340 helicopters have been shot down, seriously damaging Russia’s control of the skies and ability to support ground troops. The growing use of drones in modern warfare is also reflected in the reported loss of 42,796 drones, which are crucial for scouting, targeting, and attacking. At sea, Russia has reportedly lost 28 ships and boats, along with one submarine, hurting its ability to operate in the Black Sea and beyond.
Compared to Russia’s reported losses, data from the Institute for the Study of War suggests that at least 400,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded since the invasion started. Another 35,000 Ukrainian troops are listed as missing in action. The war in Ukraine is widely seen as the biggest and bloodiest military conflict in Europe since World War II, a global war that killed as many as 20 million people.
