Directed by Pulkit, Maalik features Rajkummar Rao as the lead, along with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Manushi Chhillar, and Saurabh Sachdeva. The supporting cast includes Saurabh Shukla, Anshumaan Pushkar, Swanand Kirkire, Rajendra Gupta and Baljinder Kaur.
The film is written by Jyotsana Nath and Pulkit. While Rajkummar’s performance has received appreciation, the film has earned negative reviews.
The gangster drama earned Rs 4.02 crore net on its opening day. Film faced complete rejection and it will not grow big over the weekend. Film’s dark theme, dates plot and kiddish treatment were the recipe for disaster.
Despite Rajkummar Rao’s strong performance and narrative around his shift from regular roles, Maalikcouldn’t match the opening numbers of his previous film Bhool Chuk Maaf, which had collected Rs 7.20 crore on Day 1.
The film also fell short of The Diplomat, John Abraham’s political thriller, which earned Rs 4.03 crore on its first day. However, it did fare better than Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, starring Vikrant Massey and Shanaya Kapoor, which opened with disaster numbers of Rs 30 lakh.
On day two, film grew by 40% and collected 5.45 crore net. Film remained flat on day three Sunday and collected 5.50 crore net. After weekend of 14.97 crore net and now the real struggle will start. Film dropped on Monday to low levels of 1.88 crore net.
Film has 4 – day total of 16.90 crore net and it’s heading for 25 crore net week one. Anything above 50 crore net will be an average result for the film but at the moment even 30 crore net looks like a stiff ask.

Tough Competition At The Theatres
Maalik faced heavy competition from other films already playing in cinemas. Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, Metro In Dino, Jurassic World Rebirthand F1 were all still drawing crowds. On top of that, many new films also released, giving viewers plenty of choices and splitting the collections. In Bollywood, Shanaya Kapoor made her debut opposite Vikrant Massey in Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan which released on the same day along with the superhero film Superman.
