Sitaare Zameen Par Faces Litmus Test at Box Office: Aamir Khan’s Quiet Return Begins
Sitaare Zameen Par will try to meet the test of fire this weekend, while the world waits to see Aamir Khan’s return to theatres. In addition to the film distributor PVR’s wide release plans and high hopes from exhibitors, the film’s advance sale booking has surprisingly opened quietly, along with indicators of low sales for Day 1.
A Sir Merited Wide Release, But Only Modestly Interested
Sitaare Zameen Par was originally a plan for a platform release across 1000–1500 screens. It seemed that even those numbers flipped when distributor PVR Pictures went wide, reserving more than 3250 screens across India. Moving forward, the intent was to take advantage of Aamir Khan’s name and rely upon word-of-mouth momentum. But gateways to advance selling tell a different story.
At the time of News Publisher’s print on Thursday at 3 PM, the film sold a total of around 25,000 tickets; along the way, PVRInox sold 20,500, and Cinepolis is a close second. The presale total of sales tickets will cease altogether at no greater than around 45,000 screens, well beneath normal benchmarks on the day of release for an Aamir Khan film.
On the day of the film release, total ticket collection will hang between ₹9 crore and ₹10 crore.
Given the mediocre booking response and limited appeal of slice-of-life dramas in the post-pandemic marketplace, Sitaare Zameen Par is currently tracking towards a Day 1 collection of around ₹7.5 to ₹8 crore. While decent for a midsized film, this is still underwhelming for a film headlined by one of Bollywood’s biggest stars.
Furthermore, the film’s music has failed to generate meaningful pre-release hype, diminishing any excitement.
Word Of Mouth Will Be Key
Despite the low opening, it’s not all doom and gloom. The film can still find audience traction over the weekend — a strong Saturday jump and Monday hold can turn the tide of the film into safety. Given this film’s reasonable costs and genre, insiders think that at minimum the film needs to do ₹120 crore net in India to be a moderate success.
The moment of truth now lies in positive WOM and audience appreciation, as block bookings and metro footfall won’t protect the opening.
What’s Working & What’s Not
✅ What’s Good:
❌ What’s Bad:
-
Music didn’t really connect with audiences
-
Limited genre appeal post-2020
-
Weak early booking figures

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par is getting off to a lacklustre start, with early bookings pointing to a single-digit figure on Friday morning. While the widespread release and Khan’s brand value give it an opportunity to recover, the fate of the film will now solely depend on audience reception and word of mouth expanding over the weekend.
This is a real example of ‘slow start, strong finish’ — if the product connects!
