Aamir Khan‘s long-awaited comeback film, Sitaare Zameen Par, after a soft opening, accomplished a phenomenal 200% growth from Friday to Sunday, reminding all that strong content and the power of word-of-mouth at the Indian box office is still a possibility.
Record-breaking weekend: Friday-to-Sunday trend
With so many questions regarding a film that was a remake of the Spanish hit Champions, no action to attract the audience, no known chartbuster soundtrack, and that it is an out-of-the-ordinary commercial film, Sitaare Zameen Par opened and helped overcome much of the disbelief with a large leap on Sunday, and in some cases, public screenings & shares the image with its regular motion picture association.
-
Day 1 (Friday): ₹10.70 crore
-
Day 2 (Saturday): ₹19.90 crore
-
Day 3 (Sunday): ₹29.25 crore (early estimates)
From ₹10.70 crore to potentially ₹30 crore in just 72 hours — that’s Aamir Khan magic.
Advance Bookings: A Surge That Spoke Volumes
-
Friday: 49,500 tickets
-
Saturday: 80,000 tickets
-
Sunday: 155,000 tickets
The spike in advance ticket sales clearly reflected the growing demand, culminating in houseful nights and post-midnight shows in metros.
Overseas Performance Adds Another ₹18 Cr+
In international markets, the film minted:
-
Day 1: $852K (₹7.38 crore)
-
Day 2: $1.25 million (₹10.75 crore)
-
Total: $2.10 million (₹18.13 crore)
The film directed by RS Prasanna is now expected to gross a weekend total of between ₹60 and 61 crore with the massive boost received on Sunday.
For a film like this, ₹60–61 crore is impressive, as Sitaare handles the weekend total; this confirms it as one of the best international openers of the year for a drama.
Multiplexes, Masses & Momentum
Aamir’s emotional sports comedy continues to show some good traction beyond the national multiplex chains and to the single screens too.
In the PVR Inox and Cinepolis chain combined total, the lead for total gross was ₹12.10 crore by 3 PM on Sunday — at the same time last Saturday had a total of ₹7.90 crore — that, according to the same data, will show a growth of approx. 60%.
Even more traditional mass centres have now joined the movement in the film and provide a decent weekday picture for the same reason.
Aamir Khan’s Comeback Is Complete
Sitaare Zameen Par had everything working against it — remake fatigue, lack of buzz and not the best opening — on opening day. But like a box office phoenix, it has risen off the back of content, conviction and connection.
Aamir Khan has finally seemed to find the rhythm he lost so many years ago after delivering a goldmine of a box office with Dangal (2016).
