Sitaare Zameen Par Certification Delayed

CBFC Stalls Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par Just Days Before Release

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) of India has stalled Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par due to no censor certificate having been cleared just days before its theatrical release.

“Days Before Theatrical Release Unsure Of Its Censor Certificate”

The reports suggest that the stall was put in place due to a dispute over two cuts regarding the censor certificate.

Aamir Khan Is Opposed to the Changes Proposed by CBFC

According to a recent report, Aamir Khan, the producer and star of the film, is actively opposed to the changes proposed by the CBFC.

A source shared:

CBFC has suggested two cuts but Aamir believes the film should be passed without changes. Aamir and director R S Prasanna have pieced the film together for a reason, and those scenarios do make total sense when experiencing the whole context.

Due to this opposition, the CBFC has withheld the censor certificate pending Aamir attending the CBFC Examining Committee again — which he can do on the 16th of June, in pursuit of a resolution to get the film cleared for release.

Aamir has stated the censor certificate is required prior to allowing advance bookings, as tickets cannot be sold before CBFC clearance.

Certified in the UK: Film Given 12A Certificate From BBFC

While the Indian release of Sitaare Zameen Par remains in uncertainty, its 12A certification has already been received from the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).

The UK classification website also notes the length of 2 hours and 35 minutes, with content flagged for “discrimination and moderate sex references”.

This international certification indicates the film is structurally and thematically acceptable for global audiences — which could increase pressure on the CBFC to reconsider.

A Strategic Shift In the Original Release Plans

Originally planned for a slow rollout on a few screens, Sitaare Zameen Par is now scheduled to open in 3,000 to 3,500 screens across India due to high demand from exhibitors.

To put this in context, Aamir Khan has also opted out of a pre-release OTT deal, making this one of the few theatrical-first releases in the current digital-first era.

About Sitaare Zameen Par

Directed by R S Prasanna, the film stars Genelia Deshmukh alongside Aamir Khan. Interestingly, the film is billed as a spiritual fact to Khan’s 2007 Taare Zameen Par.

The plot centres on children with special needs, wrapped into a feel-good story about sport.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Sitaare Zameen Par is shaping up to be one of the most impactful and socially relevant releases of 2025, and its potential to say something profound about society is exciting.

We now await its CBFC certification, and the outcome of Aamir Khan’s June 16 meeting will determine if the film gets released on its original date — or is delayed.

If the UK classification is any indication, the film appears ready for public audiences.

Now, all eyes are on whether the CBFC shares similar sensibilities — and whether reasoning and context win out, or if cuts will be enforced.

One thing is for sure: Sitaare Zameen Par is already sparking conversation — even before hitting theatres.
