Rick Moranis Set to Return in Spaceballs 2
Rick Moranis will be re-playing Dark Helmet, the character that spoofs Darth Vader, in the upcoming sequel to Spaceballs.
After a decades-long absence from the silver screen, Rick Moranis will, again, be taking on the role he originated in 1987’s Spaceballs. Alongside Moranis, Bill Pullman is also expected to return for the anxiously awaited sequel as well. Pullman will, again, be playing Lone Starr, a spoof on Harrison’s Ford’s Han Solo from the Star Wars films. Also, two new members to the series have boarded the sequel: Keke Palmer (Nope) and Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*), Bill’s son.
Mel Brooks starred in and directed the first Spaceballs movie and the veteran funnyman will be returning as far as acting is concerned in the forthcoming sequel. Brooks will once again play Yogurt, the spoof of the green “wise master” Yoda character who was first seen in The Empire Strikes Back. Good decision, that is, as Yoda might have said.
Rick Moranis was in a slew of goofy comedies back in the 1980’s and 1990’s like the offbeat My Blue Heaven where he played opposite Steve Martin. However, Moranis is best known for his work in the Ghostbusters pictures and the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids movies.
This sequel to Spaceballs is due to hit theaters in 2027, some forty years after the original picture graced the screen. With a mediocre “B-” CinemaScore grade, the original was not a huge hit by any measure, but the movie has found a fan base over the decades thanks to the popularity of the more recent Star Wars-based pictures.
Bill Pullman was always a big star in the 1990’s and appeared in major hits like Casper and Independence Day as well as art house movies like David Lynch’s Lost Highway. He is, arguably, best known for his work in the romantic comedy, While You Were Sleeping, where he played the love interest of the character played by then superstar, Sandra Bullock.
Josh Greenbaum will be directing the new Spaceballs movie. He’s the comic mastermind behind the gem, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. It is especially noteworthy that Moranis will be joining this project as he quit acting many years ago to care for his children after the death of his wife. Though Moranis has been in the news and seen since, this feels like his first really big project in years and his fans couldn’t be happier for him. Five years ago, Moranis was sadly “sucker-punched” in New York City which prompted a search for the attacker by the NYPD. A homeless man eventually pleaded guilty to committing the crime.
Proving you certainly can’t keep a good man down, Moranis’s comeback is more than welcome and his fans will hopefully turn out to support his latest endeavor if it’s as funny as the first Spaceballs.
