Matt Reeves Finishes Script for The Batman Sequel

Matt Reeves has completed the screenplay for the long-awaited sequel to The Batman which is due out October 1, 2027.

You can’t rush two things in life: great art or a good superhero movie. Coming several years after the premiere of 2022’s The Batman, Matt Reeves has finally finished the screenplay for The Batman Part II. IMDb lists Colin Farrell in the cast as Oz Cobb which makes fans believe the great actor will return in the follow-up movie which will once again showcase Robert Pattinson in the role of Batman.

A picture of the cover of Reeves’ finished screenplay was posted and fans are happy that the movie has finally been written. Mattson Tomlin is the co-writer of the script whose front page was prominently featured on Instagram. Though the finished film is over two years away from a theatrical release, it’s good that DC fans are aware that the script has been completed.

Meanwhile, a new rendition of Superman is headed for theaters in a couple of weeks which was helmed by James Gunn. The $225 million budget of this upcoming July release suggests that this could be the Superman movie audiences have been waiting for their whole lives. Financially speaking, Superman movies tend to be less profitable than Batman movies. 2013’s Man of Steel  only earned $670 million worldwide, $291 million of that being from domestic ticket sales. 2022’s Reeves-directed The Batman garnered $772 million worldwide and $369 million domestically. The fact that Gunn’s newest movie is called simply Superman this time around could make people more aware of the origin of the film which could, in turn, enhance its box-office receipts both domestically and worldwide.

Matt Reeves has come a long way from his The Pallbearer days. That Reeves-helmed 1996 comedy, which featured David Schwimmer (“Friends”) and Gwyneth Paltrow, barely registered at the box-office or with CinemaScore audiences (it got a “B-“), yet Reeves has found his way into the realm of superhero movies and directed Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as well before 2022’s The Batman. Reeves has become a force to contend with as far as box-office blockbusters are concerned.

Many expect The Batman Part II to be not only as good as the 2022 film, but potentially better. Similarly, The Dark Knight was better than Batman Begins back in the earlier parts of the 21st century. Reeves has put a lot of time into this new The Batman picture, so expect the results to be worth the intense labor that went into the writing process of the movie.
