Colombo, Sri Lanka-A passenger bus toppled a cliff in Sri Lanka’s mountain range on Sunday, killing 21 people and injuring another 35, a police spokesman said.

The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, near the city of Kotmale, about 86 miles east of Colombo, the capital, in a mountainous area of ​​the center of Sri Lanka, police said.

The Buddhika Manathunga police -oriented door said 21 people died and 35 were being treated in hospitals.

Local television showed the fallen bus at the bottom of a cliff, while workers and others helped remove wound people from the rubble.

The driver was injured and among those admitted to the hospital for treatment. At the time of the accident, almost 50 people traveled on the bus.

Manathunga said police began an investigation to verify whether the driver’s recklessness or a technical fault of the bus caused the accident.

The bus was operated by a state bus company, police said.

Deadly bus accidents are common in Sri Lanka, especially in the mountainous regions, usually due to a reckless direction and poorly kept and narrow roads.
