Kajol Speaks Out Against Rising Paparazzi Culture in Bollywood
Veteran actress Kajol, who has shouldered the Bollywood industry since the nineties, expressed her dismay with the ever-growing paparazzi culture in Mumbai. Kajol, who is famously outspoken and no-nonsense, strongly condemned these growing invasive habits of paparazzi, calling them disturbing and disrespectful.
Kajol shared her feelings in a recent interview and did not hold back.
“There are places where they should not be, like, I find it very strange when they run after actors at somebody’s funeral asking to take photos. I find that odd and a little disrespectful,” shared Kajol.
She went on to say,
“They follow you for a very long time, kilometres down the road, continuously for Juhu to Bandra, to see what building you are entering. If I was a common person, I would have gone to the cops, what do I tell the cops now?”
The past week has produced more examples of celebrities being harassed, including actor Rana Daggubati confronting, on camera, paparazzi that followed him at the airport and angrily asserting that he is a “human being” and that behaviour was unacceptable.
As incidents are abundantly documented, the discussions have returned to boundaries, consent, and the need for more responsible coverage of celebrities.
Kajol Is Back In A New Horror Movie ‘Maa’
While she discusses privacy, Kajol is also making headlines for her horror film Maa, releasing in theatres on June 27, 2025. Maa is a horror film in the expanding Shaitaan Universe which is being directed by Vishal Furia. Kajol stars as a fierce mother willing to go to the death to protect her child.
The film is produced under the Devgn Films banner owned by Ajay Devgn and Jyoti Deshpande and co-stars Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma.
Saiwyn Quadras: ‘Ajay Sir Asked Me To Write It In 10 Days’
Screenwriter Saiwyn Quadras revealed that this film was written in record time:
“Ajay sir asked me to provide him with a Horror Story for Kajol ma’am and asked me to write it in 10 days. As soon as Kajol heard the idea, she was on it.”
Drawing on inspiration from the goddess Durga and her incarnation as Maa Kali, the story captures mythology and horror the way it isn’t often seen in Bollywood.
Maa Could Also Be Developed Into A Franchise
According to Quadras, there are even developments for extending Maa into a franchise:
“I pitched Ajay Sir a new idea recently and he loved it. We will see where this goes depending on the audiences’ reaction.”

Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Kajol’s vitriolic take on paparazzi culture calls for an urgent conversation around celebrity privacy. She will be pouring this energy into her role in Maa, and from here on out, all eyes will be on the film’s release. Also, it is backed by Ajay Devgn; it has a foundation in Indian mythology, and Maa has the potential to be a genre-defining horror film and a franchise launcher for Ajay Devgn Films.
