UK-Ireland box office preview: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ roars into 688 cinemas; ‘Hot Milk’ also opens

'Jurassic World Rebirth'

Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth leads the new releases in the UK and Ireland this weekend as Gareth Edwards’ science fiction blockbuster bellows into 688 cinemas.

The film grossed £2m from previews on Wednesday, July 2 alone.

Godzilla filmmaker Edwards directs Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali as a team of skilled operatives who embark on a mission to secure life-saving DNA from dinosaurs in dangerous waters.

Rebirth is the seventh feature overall in the Jurassic Park franchise, and fourth since it was rebooted as Jurassic World in 2015.

That 2015 title is the highest-earning film in the franchise, with a huge £16.8m opening and amassing £64.5m overall. Jurassic Park still holds second place, opening to £5m and ending on £48.8m – a colossal result for 1993. The most recent title, 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, opened to £12.1m and ended on £35.1m.

All three of the World titles to date have opened above the £10m mark; although with only two films (Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy and A Minecraft Movie) having achieved that mark so far this year, replicating it would be a good result for Universal.

Alongside Rebirth, Mubi is distributing Hot Milk, which launches today in 115 cinemas. It is the directorial debut of UK playwright Rebecca Lenkiewicz, starring 2019 Screen Star of Tomorrow Emma Mackey alongside Fiona Shaw and Vicky Krieps.

Lenkiewicz has co-written several features already, including Pavel Pawlikowski’s 2013 Oscar-winning Ida (£514,319 total) and Maria Schrader’s 2022 Bafta-nominated She Said (£1.4m).
