After winning awards and hearts at international film festivals, the film is hitting theatres across the country this Friday, September 26. In a massive show of support, the film is being presented by two of India’s most celebrated filmmakers, Vetrimaaran and Anurag Kashyap.
The coming-of-age drama, directed by debutante Varsha Bharath, features a stunning lead performance by Anjali Sivaraman, who was previously seen in the Netflix series Class. The decision to release the film in Hindi comes after growing demand from audiences who want to experience this bold new story.
‘One Of The Most Original Stories’: Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap, who is known for backing unique and powerful cinema, is all praises for the film. He called Bad Girl “one of the most original stories” he has encountered. He added, “When I first read it, it reminded me of how, as a young filmmaker, I wanted to tell bold stories, and Varsha has gone beyond all my expectations.” Kashyap strongly believes that the film’s story “will relate to every girl growing up in the country.”
Questioning Labels and Judgments
Bad Girl tells the story of a teenage girl in Chennai navigating love, lust, and her own identity. Director Varsha Bharath says the film was made to question “the very idea of labels and how easily they are used to diminish women.” Lead actress Anjali Sivaraman described the role as one of the most “challenging and rewarding experiences” of her career. She said, “It’s not often that you get to inhabit a character who is unapologetically herself, even when the world refuses to accept her. I believe its themes are universal.”
An Award-Winning Festival Favourite
Before its theatrical release, Bad Girl has already made a significant impact on the global stage. The film debuted at the 54th International Film Festival Rotterdam, where it won the prestigious NETPAC award for its compelling storytelling and direction. This international acclaim has built up huge anticipation for its release in India. With music by the talented Amit Trivedi, the film promises to be an unforgettable experience.
