WEEKEND WARRIORS: Vera Farmiga To Star Opposite One of Her THE DEPARTED Co-Stars in New Movie

Vera Farmiga To Re-Team with Mark Wahlberg

Vera Farmiga has come on board a new Mark Wahlberg dramedy, Weekend Warriors, which is going to be from Apple and is about the search for an autistic kid’s favorite sports team.

Vera Farmiga is an actress whose presence in a film almost always serves as a stamp of quality for the particular movie. Of course, the well-received The Conjuring films are what Farmiga is known best for, but 19 years ago, she appeared in the Best Picture Oscar winner, The Departed. Now, Farmiga will re-team with co-star Mark Wahlberg (who received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his work in 2006’s The Departed). In Weekend Warriors, Farmiga and Wahlberg will pair up for a heartwarming story that could be an appealing one to all ages.

Stephen Chbosky is slated to pen and helm Weekend Warriors. Though some complained Chbosky’s film version of Dear Evan Hansen didn’t live up to the Broadway show, Chbosky has been winning raves for his fairly recent Vince Vaughn dramedy, Nonnas which premiered on Netflix. This new picture Chbosky is making is based on the German movie, Weekend Rebels. There is a difference between the upcoming Weekend Warriors and Weekend Rebels, though. While the original picture centered on soccer, the new picture being made for Apple is going to most likely focus on NBA teams.

Wahlberg worked with Apple before on the well-received PG-13 rated hit, The Family Plan. Apple is most likely hoping to duplicate the success of that family-themed movie with Weekend Warriors. It certainly appears that with the star power of Wahlberg and Farmiga that the ingredients are all there for a streaming movie success. Farmiga is known mainly for horror movies like Orphan and The Conjuring film series, but has tremendous versatility as an actress. She is going to be starring in The Conjuring: Last Rites which is due out in theaters this September. Many expect that film to be another huge hit for the accomplished actress.

While Farmiga and Wahlberg had the good fortune to appear in The Departed, a complex Marty Scorsese film of terrific precision and quality, Weekend Warriors looks likely to be easier to absorb and enjoy for general audiences. It will spin a tale about a child with autism whose father takes him to games to help the kid discover his favorite team.

Chbosky is also on a roll with the great viewer reception of Nonnas and the filmmaker will probably mix in the same kind of warmth into Weekend Warriors that made Nonnas such a smashing success. Expect Weekend Warriors to be a true audience pleaser and also look for more information to be revealed on the upcoming project as the movie comes closer to completion and, eventually, is released on Apple.
