Willem Dafoe Circles Role in Robert Eggers’ New Film ‘Werwulf,’ Potentially Marking Their Fourth Collaboration

Willem Dafoe Roebrt Eggers Film News Werwulf

Robert Eggers appears to have lined up his next collaboration with Willem Dafoe, as the acclaimed actor is negotiating to join Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Eggers’ upcoming feature, Werwulf, which is being developed at Focus Features. Lily-Rose Depp is also in discussions to round out the ensemble. Eggers is set to helm the film and penned the script alongside Icelandic writer and poet Sjón, his writing partner from The Northman.

Werwulf is slated to debut in theaters across North America on December 25, 2026.

Focus Features is set to finance and produce the new project. Alongside Eggers and Sjón, producers include Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner through Working Title, with Chris and Eleanor Columbus of Maiden Voyage serving as executive producers. While specific story elements remain undisclosed, the title suggests the plot will center on a legendary werewolf creature.

Dafoe has emerged as a frequent collaborator of Eggers, having taken roles in every film the director has made outside of his debut, The VVitch, including The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu. The pair are also eyeing another team-up for a Warner Bros. adaptation of A Christmas Carol, with Eggers at the helm and Dafoe potentially starring.

After starring in A24’s The Legend of Ochi, Dafoe has moved on to shoot Tenzing, a new film under Apple’s banner. Looking ahead, he’ll also feature in The Man in the Basement and The Birthday Party.
