Yulo sibling needs polish, gymnastics chief says

Karl Eldrew Yulo needs just a little more polish to his routine to follow in the footsteps of his celebrated older brother Carlos.

“He must learn to control his energy all the time,” said Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion.

The rising 16-year-old gymnastics star finished with a silver in the men’s junior vault of the recent Asian Artistic Gymnastics championships, where he tallied 13.850 points, narrowly losing to Bak Jun-woo (13.933) of the host country during the meet held in Jecheon, South Korea. An Dae-geon, another Korean, bagged the bronze with 13.783 points.

The multiple gold medalist in the Palarong Pambansa initially bagged the silver in the same event in 2023 in Singapore before seizing the gold last year in Uzbekistan.

“He (Eldrew) was a little bit excited. He should control it, but he was so good,” said Carrion.

Carlos, who made history by winning two gold medals in the vault and floor exercise during last year’s Paris Olympics. The 25-year-old Olympian clinched a gold and three bronze medals recently in the Asian tournament.

He topped the floor exercise and landed third in the vault, parallel bars and all-around in his first major tournament in months.

“After not being in the competition for several months, it’s good that he did well by winning medals and the gold in his favorite event (floor exercise),” said Carrion. INQ
